Department of Geography was established in the year 1994, at the time of inception of the college itself, with a Bachelor of Arts course with Geography as one of the elective subjects.
At present, the department of Geography, one of the foremost departments, undergraduate programme of Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) with Geography. It has also been imparting knowledge of the subject at graduation level under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) to the students of various disciplines and programmes opting for Geography as the second core subject or as Generic Elective. The department offers courses that inculcate the employability skills and enhances critical thinking and cognitive skills of the students which integrates values and entrepreneurial skill development for the students.
At present the department has the strength of 300 students in B.A. with Geography. Apart from effective curriculum delivery, the subject society of the department has also made sincere efforts to provide exposure to the geography in the real world to the students.
Students are also initiated into research by providing guidance and practical exposure of data collection through surveys and its analysis and by motivating them to submit project work on a research topic in their final year as one of the Skill Enhancement Courses. The department organises seminars, field survey, conferences, and competitions to create awareness and sensitise students on the current geographical, technological, economic, political, and social affairs which enhances their subject as well as general knowledge.
The sincere and dedicated faculty of the Department is responsible for our good academic record over the years. The department thrives to reach standards of excellence in teaching, learning and research.
Faculty members have also been actively involved in publication, faculty development programmes, orientation programmes, seminars, conferences along with serving the institution in various areas with full involvement, dedication, and commitment.

Report on Mock drill onDisaster Management on 01.12.2021
A mock drill was organized by Disaster Management Cell of SGGSJ Govt. College Paonta Sahib on 1st December, 2021 in collaboration with the Distt. Disaster Management Authority Nahan. Principal of the college Dr. Veena Rathore chaired this programme. Prof. Reena Chauhan welcomed Principal, all the members of the team from Distt. Disaster Management, staff and students at the beginning of the programme. Dr. Veena Rathore, in her address, appreciated the spirit of the students who showed their enthusiasm to attend the mock drill. She introduced the disaster management cell of the college to the students and appreciated the efforts of the team for organizing the mock drill for disaster management to students. Prof. Vimmi Rani (associate professor) was the coordinator of this Mock Drill.
Prof. Vimmi Rani also made students aware of various kinds of disasters to which the local area is prone to and also presented a vote of thanks to the guests. The programme was formally come offwell with National Anthem.
Disaster related mock drill was conducted by the Geography Department. Around 200 students participated in the drill.

हिमवंती मीडिया/पावंटा साहिब
राजकीय महाविद्यालय पांवटा साहिब में आपदा प्रबंधन सेल के द्वारा एक मॉक ड्रिल कार्यक्रम आयोजित किया गया, जिसकी अध्यक्षता प्राचार्या डॉ. वीना राठौर ने की । आपदा प्रबंधन सेल की संयोजिका प्रो .विम्मी रानी ने इस अवसर पर सभी विद्यार्थियों को विभिन्न आपदाओं एवं सुरक्षा के उपायों के बारे में विस्तार से बताया । इस विशेष अवसर पर होम गार्ड कम्पनी कंमाडर सुरेन्द्र पुण्डीर व अग्नि शमन विभाग से जयपाल शर्मा ने विद्यार्थियों से अपने विचार सांझा किये ।
उन्होंने विस्तार से असामयिक आगजनी, भू-स्खलन और भूकम्प के बारे में विद्यार्थियों को बताया और उससे बचने के उपायों के बारे में भी विद्यार्थियों को अवगत करवाया । होम गार्ड एवं अग्नि शमन विभाग से दिनेश कुमार प्लाटून कंमाडर, यशपाल, ईश्वर चंद, नरेश कुमार व सहीराम सहयोगी के रूप में मौजूद रहे।
इस अवसर पर आपदा प्रबंधन सेल के सह संयोजक प्रो . कमलेश शर्मा, डॉ. रितु पंत , डॉ. मोहन सिंह चौहान, डॉ. रीना चौहान, प्रो सीमा त्यागी , प्रो. तनु चंदेल, प्रो .धनवंती कंडासी, प्रो. किरण, प्रो. पुष्पा यादव, प्रो. चीनु बंसल, बाहर सैनी , अपर्णा गर्ग, डॉ. जय चंद और सुशील तोमर उपस्थित रहे।

Disaster management plan prepared by the Disaster Management cell of the college was well appreciated by the department of higher education and the plan was set as the bench mark for all the colleges of the state.
Disaster management cell
1.) The disaster Management cell has incorporated the new building in already existing guide map of college by Dec.10th-2021.
2.) Evacuation plan has been constructed and displayed in the college campus by Dec 10th 2021.
3.) Emergency Helpline Numbers are displayed on a new board in the college campus.
4.) Four Ramps have been constructed in the college building to give access to disabled students in case of normal working days and During disasters.
5.) A Chemical waste disposal pit has been constructed in newly built chemistry Department and will be used for disposal of chemicals by the Chemistry Department.
DISASTER MANAGEMENT/AWARENESS PROGRAM
An awareness programme was conducted by the department of Geography on Disaster preparedness in collaboration with National Disaster Response force & 14th Battalion of Civil Defense (NDRF) oraganized an awareness /capacity building program for the students/community in the vulnerable areas of sub-division of Paonta Sahib at Government College Paonta sahib on dated 8 April 2022. The Program was organized by the Disaster Management cell of the college under the chairmanship of officiating Principal of the college, Dr. Ritu Pant. Assistant Commandant Mr. Sagar Singh Pal was the chief guest of the program. The programme was organized under the Convenership of Prof. Vimmi Rani (Convener ,Disaster Management Cell)

A lecture on Disaster Management was delivered by Prof.Vimmi Rani, Associate Prof. in Geography, Convener-Disaster Management Cell, Govt. Degree College Paonta Sahib on 24/11/21 in the department of BCA/PGDCA to spread awareness about disasters. The lecture was attended by 54 students of BCA/PGDCA.
A lecture on Disaster Management was delivered by Prof.Vimmi Rani,Associate Prof. in Geography, Convener-Disaster Management Cell, Govt. Degree College Paonta Sahib on 03/12/21 in the Room No.101 to BCOM II students to spread awareness about disasters. The lecture was attended by 64 students.
Bridge Course
One week Bridge Course was conducted By Prof.Vimmi Rani in the department of geography.
Bridge Course was attended by 28 students of ba(1) and 19 students of ba(2) in the month of sept. and oct. 2021. The objective of the course was to inculcate the basic knowledge about the subject of geography who didn’t study geography at +2 level and to those who want to study basic concepts.
