A REPORT-

A lecture on the sexual harassment of women at workplace was organised in room number 202 on 14/9/23by INTERNAL COMMITTEEE and Woman Development Cell Prof. Usha Joshi invited the convenor of the Internal Complaints Committee Prof. Vimmi Rani to deliver the lecture.. The program started with Badge pinning of Dr Ritu Pant Chief Guest- Officiating Principal and Prof. Vimmi Rani stated that Supreme Court of India in case of Vishakha vs State of Rajasthan has reaffirmed that Sexual harassment is a form of discrimination against women and violates the constitutional Right to Equality, Life, and Liberty. With more and more women joining workforce, ensuring an enabling working environment for women through legislation has been held imperative by the government. The Act contains provisions to protect every woman from any act of sexual harassment at workplace by fixing the responsibility on the employer as well as District or Additional District Magistrate or the Collector or Deputy Collector of every district in the state and by laying down a statutory redressal mechanism. Sexual harassment-includes any of the unwelcome acts or behaviour namely –

  1. Physical contact or advances
  2. A demand or request for sexual favours
  3. Making sexually coloured remarks
  4. Showing pornography
  5. Any other unwelcome physical, verbal or nonverbal conduct of sexual nature.

Further she explained in detail about the meaning of sexual harassment, aggrieved woman, respondent, employee, employer, chairperson, Domestic worker etc. she explained about the constitution of the Internal Complaint Committee and Local complaint committee. She also focused upon how the complaint of the sexual harassment can be made and how conciliation can be reached between the aggrieved woman and the respondent. She also explained about how inquiry into complaint made by the aggrieved woman be conducted by the internal committee and how committee can determine compensation to the aggrieved woman. She also explained about the prohibition of publication or making public contents of complaint and inquiry proceedings. She concluded her lecture by explaining the duties of employer with regard to safe working environment at the workplace.

Duties of Employer

  1. Provide a safe working environment at the workplace.
  2. Display at any conspicuous place in the workplace the penal consequences of sexual harassment.
  3. Organize workshops and awareness programs at regular intervals.
  4. Providing necessary facilities to internal committee or local committee for dealing with complaint and conducting enquiry.
  5. Assist in securing the attendance of respondent and witness before committee.
  6. Make available information to committee which it may require, regarding the complaint.
  7. Provide assistance to the woman if she chooses to file a complaint to the offence under the IPC (45of1860) or any other law for time being in force.
  8. Treat sexual harassment as misconduct under the service rules and initiateaction for such misconduct.

The lecture ended with National Anthem and vote of thanks offered by Prof. Vimmi Rani. The lecture was attended by 165 students. And the members of the Internal Committee, Prof. Tanu Chandel, Prof. Mandeep Gandhi ,Prof. Usha Joshi ,Prof. Pratibha ,prof. Deepak attended.
